reason for the attention paid to thorium.<\/p><p>At the start of the 2000s, several entrepreneurs in Norway worked systematically with plans to build <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips8'><a href='https:\/\/fensfeltet.no\/en\/glossary\/kjernekraftverk\/' target='_blank'>nuclear power plants*<\/a><\/span> based on <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips21'><a href='https:\/\/fensfeltet.no\/en\/glossary\/thorium\/' target='_blank'>thorium*<\/a><\/span> and extraction of thorium from the Fen class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The government-appointed Thorium Committee wrote in 2008 that Norwegian deposits of thorium contain a possible \"energy content that corresponds to approximately 100 times the oil that Norway has extracted as of today, plus the content of the remaining reserves combined\".<\/p><p>Although the amount of thorium in the Fen Complex may be large, questions have been raised as to whether the deposit is worth mining. Therefore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/centers\/national-minerals-information-center\/thorium-statistics-and-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Geological Survey<\/a> (USGS) removed the Fen Complex from its list of world thorium reserves in 2012.<\/p><p>Few believe that mining of thorium in the Fen Complex can be profitable. Several observers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/current-and-future-generation\/molten-salt-reactors.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The World Nuclear Association<\/a>, reports that the country is announcing the launch of the world's first full-scale thorium reactor in 2030.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: var( --e-global-typography-a7edb78-font-size ); font-style: var( --e-global-typography-a7edb78-font-style ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-a7edb78-font-weight ); letter-spacing: var( --e-global-typography-a7edb78-letter-spacing ); word-spacing: var( --e-global-typography-a7edb78-word-spacing ); text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var( --e-global-color-123ab59 );\"> Although China is the furthest along the trail, similar projects are being developed in countries such as the USA and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tu.no\/artikler\/mener-saltsmeltebasert-kjernekraft-kan-lose-energikrisen\/539052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denmark<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stortinget.no\/no\/Hva-skjer-pa-Stortinget\/Horing\/visning-av-skriftlig-innspill\/?dnid=31668&amp;h=10004812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement to Committee on Business and Industry in the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget)<\/a> in 2023, <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips36'><a href='https:\/\/fensfeltet.no\/en\/glossary\/ife\/' target='_blank'>IFE*<\/a><\/span> stated that there is a long way to go before thorium can be used as an alternative to uranium.\u00a0<\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to the IFE, thorium is not<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a fast track to nuclear energy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> as <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the development of thorium as a fuel takes time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and since the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips37'><a href='https:\/\/fensfeltet.no\/en\/glossary\/iea\/' target='_blank'>IEA*<\/a><\/span> have not developed a separate safety regime for thorium:<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><em><strong>\u00ab<\/strong>There is no tradition of using thorium in the nuclear power industry, and it is time-consuming to change the type of fuel as it requires very extensive regulatory approval processes.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5382b378 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"5382b378\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22183e21 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"22183e21\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"650\" src=\"https:\/\/fensfeltet.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Rectangle-11546.svg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-257\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d890fc6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"d890fc6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"950\" height=\"827\" src=\"https:\/\/fensfeltet.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/thorium-forekomster-i-Norge.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-770\" alt=\"Et norgeskart viser hvor i landet det er registrert forekomster av thorium. In the 2000s, the production of thorium amounted to only a few hundred tonnes annually. In addition, there are reported to be stocks of unused thorium globally (see e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regjeringen.no\/globalassets\/upload\/oed\/pdf_filer\/horinger\/horing-thoriumutvalgets-rapport\/thoriumrapporten-norsk-versjon.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The thorium committee's report<\/a>).<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/periodicals\/mcs2023\/mcs2023-thorium.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The USGS also reports in 2023<\/a> that thorium is increasingly being replaced by non-radioactive materials in the manufacture of products such as electrodes and light bulbs.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d3e4138 tsection tsection3 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d3e4138\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-126b607 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"126b607\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Thorium as a possible by-product <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2016c8c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2016c8c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As mentioned, it is uncertain whether the deposit of thorium on the Fen Complex is viable, which led to the USGS removing the Fen Complex from its list of deposits in the world in 2012. Only a few of the applications for thorium have reached an industrial stage, which also applies to thorium as fuel in nuclear power.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Thorium is largely a by-product of the extraction of rare earths. This will also be the case for the Fen Complex: <strong>If rare earths are being mined here, thorium will become a by-product<\/strong><\/p><p>Thorium as a by-product can therefore improve the economic basis for mining. As we have seen, the problem is that there is only a limited market today. Before thorium can be handled by a larger market, this radioactive element must probably be stored or disposed of properly. Such storage will make the \"product\" available for future use.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>We must also add that there has been no political will to invest in nuclear power in general or thorium in particular in Norway. Since we are talking about a radioactive material such as thorium, it is natural that many people wonder about the dangers this can entail: Will mining, even for what are often called \"green minerals\", produce dangerous radioactive waste on Fen?<\/p><p>Much of the knowledge about thorium at the Fen complex is derived from investigations in the 1970s, 1980s and early 2000s. Then the actors looked mainly for thorium in the areas of the Fen complex where the old iron mines were located. In these areas, the geology is characterized by the so-called red rock, where the natural radioactivity is relatively high. This is also where the largest deposits of thorium are expected to be.\u00a0<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/fensfeltet.no\/en\/det_radioaktive_slagget_ved_sove_gruver\/\"><strong>READ MORE: What happens to the radioactive slag at S\u00f8ve?\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p><p>In the map on this page, we can see the most radioactive areas marked in dark red. However, the area of \u200b\u200bthe REE deposit is expected to have the least radioactivity.
