It is believed that the average grade of rare earths in Fen is between 1 and 2 percent, with several richer zones at 3 to 5 percent.\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var( --e-global-color-123ab59 );\">In the map above, the green-marked 'belt' is assumed to have the highest concentration of REE.<\/span><\/p><p>It can be challenging to grasp the significance of these percentages, and an grade of 1 or 2 percent may appear low. This can be favorable for  extraction and separation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>In the red rock, that dominates the old iron mines on Fen, there are also rare earths, but here they appear much finer grained and are therefore difficult to extract. At the same time, the content of radioactive thorium is higher in the red rock.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-db96e08 tsection tsection3 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"db96e08\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7cfb78e8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7cfb78e8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The ratio between the various REE metals in the Fen Complex deposit <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7f39e09 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7f39e09\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Another factor of interest in understanding the deposit in Fen relates to the distribution of the 17 rare earth species. Market prices vary significantly from one element to another, with the 'magnetic' metals like dysprosium and neodymium having the highest value.<\/p>\n<p>Given that Fen shares important similarities with active deposits in the USA, China, and Australia, we can anticipate a similar proportion of key metals in Fen. This aligns with reports from researchers and licensees (companies) in the Fen area. Thus far, the consensus has been that the Fen Complex contains a 'healthy' amount of the most valuable raw materials<\/p>\n<p>A final picture of how the various metals are distributed in the area of Fen will only come when the licensees have documented their deposits in more detail.&nbsp;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4cebe25 tsection tsection5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"4cebe25\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a2abb44 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"1a2abb44\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-547a85b8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"547a85b8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Tailings and by-products<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-12b283e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"12b283e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The mineral deposits of rare earth elements constitute only a small percentage of the ore. This implies that large volumes of tailings \nand waste rock must be managed once the valuable minerals have been extracted.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>This will likely involve the implementation of three parallel techniques:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>1) development of by-products<\/p><p>2) backfilling of tailings in the mine\u00a0<\/p><p>3) on-land disposal\u00a0<\/p><p>The rock type that contains rare earth minerals is often referred to as rauhaugite (re-dolomite-carbonatite). It primarily consists of carbonates (80 to 90 percent).\u00a0<a style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ngu.no\/geologiske-ressurser\/karbonatmineraler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NGU<\/a><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var( --e-global-color-123ab59 );\"> states that carbonate minerals, such as limestone and dolomite, are \"Norway's most important industrial mineral group\". <\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var( --e-global-color-123ab59 );\">Carbonate minerals are utilized in various industries, including the paper industry, cement production, and environmental applications such as acid neutralization.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var( --e-global-color-123ab59 );\">There is a potential opportunity to produce marketable by-products from the surplus materials at Fen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>By-products can reduce the need for on-land disposal and enhance the financial viability of a mine. However, these by-products must meet cleanliness standards, and there will be a requirement to separate out radioactive thorium.
