The drillings showed that there are rare earths at least 1,000 meters below ground. In the rauhaugite, the rare earths are bound in phosphate (monazite) and fluorocarbonates (bastn\u00e4site).<\/p><p>In the red rock, that dominates the old iron mines on Fen, there are also rare earths, but here they appear much finer grained and are therefore difficult to extract. China also leads the field in the value chain of REE-mangets.<\/p><p>Europe's vulnerability is the backdrop to why the EU has set of to reducing dependence on China. In the EU <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips29'><a href='https:\/\/fensfeltet.no\/en\/glossary\/crma\/' target='_blank'>CRMA*<\/a><\/span> it states that 10 percent of critical raw materials must be covered by mining in Europe by 2030.<\/p><p>International events, such as the US-China trade war and the Ukraine war, have led to greater awareness of supply risks. Many countries are intensifying their efforts to reduce vulnerability. Strong growth in the demand for rare earths is therefore expected in the coming decades.<\/p><p>This will particularly apply to those <em>the magnetic rare earths<\/em>, such as neodymium (Nd) and dysprosium (Dy). These are metals that are included in the production of light, strong and durable magnets: So-called permanent or super magnets that provide a significant gain in both efficiency and maintenance.<\/p><p>The green transition requires increased use, reuse and extraction of a number of mineral resources. In many ways, it is the minerals that will take us from oil dependence and into renewables. A number of military weapons and satellite systems would be more expensive, heavier and inferior without rare earths, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airandspaceforces.com\/article\/rare-earth-uncertainty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">airandspaceforces.com<\/a>.<\/p><p>Just under half a ton (417 kilograms) of rare earths goes into making one F-35 aircraft, according to official figures from <a href=\"https:\/\/sgp.fas.org\/crs\/natsec\/R41744.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Congressional Research Service in USA<\/a>.<\/p><p>In security policy, the states' strategic assessments are important, also when it comes to access to raw materials. This is especially true in a world where we see rising tension between different blocs, and increased rivalry between the US and China.<\/p><p>In connection with a Civita event in Oslo in December 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/e24.no\/energi-og-klima\/i\/8JEz1r\/tror-dette-kan-bli-et-norsk-metalleventyr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said this<\/a>:<\/p><blockquote><p>\"Increased awareness\u00a0of who to trade with in the future is important, as it is not possible to separate security and finance.\"<\/p><\/blockquote><p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/opinions_216080.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speech in June 2023<\/a> he also said that there are also \u201ccommercial risks in making oneself dependent on goods from authoritarian regimes. And I think we have learned the lesson from Russian gas.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-33bcb66 tsection tsection5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"33bcb66\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-83e1bc5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"83e1bc5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6cc14fb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6cc14fb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Does the Fen Complex have the answers?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0fa09bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0fa09bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Our modern societies are dependent on REE.\u00a0<\/p><p>Both the EU and Norway have promoted new strategies to reduce dependence on China, to secure supplies and to reduce vulnerability. The goal is also to establish their own robust <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips15'><a href='https:\/\/fensfeltet.no\/en\/glossary\/verdikjeder\/' target='_blank'>value chains*<\/a><\/span>, to ensure access to important infrastructure.<\/p><p>In the EU's Critical raw materials act<span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips29'><a href='https:\/\/fensfeltet.no\/en\/glossary\/crma\/' target='_blank'>CRMA*<\/a><\/span>) the goal is a safe and sustainable supply of critical raw materials.<\/p><p><strong>A response to this ambition can be found in Nome in Telemark. This paragraph is taken from Norway's mineral strategy:<\/strong><\/p><blockquote><p><em>\"At the top of the EU's list of supply risks related to critical raw materials are the rare earth elements (REE). Norway has several interesting deposits of rare earths, the most important of which is the Fen Complex at Ulefoss in Telemark.
